Level 10 dog training

Level 10 dog training

For me, the most important thing in my dog training is not that the dog does everything perfectly flawless, but that the feeling is right. The feeling that we are in this together, that we are a team, that we are having fun and trying to reach the same goal. You know, when your dog looks at you and it’s like you share one mind.

That feeling is not always there. Sometimes we struggle. And I think that part of that is due to the fact that it is hard to measure abstract values (as feelings and attitude and working together), and that in turn makes it hard to know why it sometimes works and other times doesn’t work.

So, when I came across “level 10 life” I immediately thought of dog training. My first “level 10” looks like this:

It’s an overview of the obedience exercises in the class we are competing in and a diagram of different aspects of our training: attitude, focus, passive, active, chains, details.

This is nice, but not really what I was aiming for. So I tried this instead:

And I think this is more about a holistic view of my life and training with my dog. I chose areas that are interesting to me: goals, team, daily, focus, confidence, harmony, support, and physio. And it made it very clear that even though I have all the support in the world (husband, family, friends) I m struggling with my goals and my focus in my dog training. (Physio is also low, but it’s getting better!). That made me start to think about my goals, and I realise that what seemed important a year ago no longer fits my plans and lifestyle. I need to change my goals!

With the right goals, my focus to reach them will improve, the harmony in my life will be better, and that wow-feeling will probably return to most of our training sessions – because we will be training the right things! I don’t know that for sure, but I really think that choosing the right goals are a BIG thing.

So…What does your “level ten dog training” look like? What areas will you include? What will you learn?

Only one way to find out πŸ™‚
